Tips for Safe Gambling
Decide how much you can afford to lose and stick to it. Never deposit more than your budget allows.
If you're on a losing streak, walk away. Chasing losses leads to bigger losses. There will always be another session.
Set time limits for your sessions. Step away, stretch, do something else. Gambling should be entertainment, not a marathon.
Alcohol and drugs impair judgment. Make decisions with a clear head.
Most casinos offer deposit limits, loss limits, session limits, and self-exclusion options. Use them proactively.
There's no shame in asking for help. The helplines above are free, confidential, and staffed by professionals who understand.
Warning Signs of Problem Gambling
Problem gambling can develop gradually and may not be obvious at first. Gambling may be becoming a problem if you recognise any of these patterns in yourself or someone close to you:
If any of these apply to you or someone you know, please contact one of the helplines above. You are not alone, and help is available 24/7.
Take the Self-Assessment Test
This quick self-assessment is based on internationally recognised screening tools. It is not a clinical diagnosis, but it can help you reflect on your gambling behaviour. Answer honestly — no data is collected or stored.
Budget Management
Effective money management is one of the most important tools for keeping gambling safe and enjoyable. Follow these principles:
Before you start, decide on a maximum amount you are comfortable losing completely. This should come from disposable income only — never from rent, bills, savings, or borrowed money.
Most licensed casinos allow you to set daily, weekly, or monthly deposit limits. Set these to match your budget before you start playing. Once set, increases typically have a cooling-off period.
If you reach your budget limit, stop immediately. Chasing losses is the single biggest driver of problem gambling. Accept the loss, walk away, and return another day within your budget.
Keep a log of all deposits and withdrawals. Many casinos provide transaction histories. Reviewing these regularly helps you stay aware of your actual spending versus what you planned.
Consider using a separate bank account or e-wallet with only your gambling budget in it. This creates a natural barrier preventing you from spending more than planned.
If you win, withdraw your profits. Playing with winnings often leads to giving them all back. Set a rule: when you double your session budget, cash out the profit.
Time Management
Losing track of time is common when gambling. These strategies help you stay in control of how long you play:
Decide how long you will play before opening a casino. Use a phone alarm or timer as a hard stop. 30–60 minutes is a reasonable session length.
Most regulated casinos offer “reality check” features that alert you at regular intervals (e.g., every 30 minutes) with your session duration and net position. Enable these in your account settings.
Step away from the screen at least every 30 minutes. Stand up, walk around, get fresh air. Continuous play leads to poor decision-making and impulsive bets.
Fatigue impairs judgment just as much as alcohol. Set a “no gambling after 11pm” rule or similar boundary. Make decisions with a rested, clear mind.
Restrict gambling to specific days (e.g., weekends only). Daily gambling significantly increases the risk of developing a problem. Keep gambling as an occasional activity, not a daily habit.
Self-Exclusion Options
Self-exclusion allows you to block yourself from gambling platforms for a set period (or permanently). Each market has its own system. Once activated, casinos are legally required to deny you access.
π©πͺ Germany — OASIS National Exclusion System
Germany operates OASIS (Online-Abfrage Spielerstatus), a centrally managed exclusion database. When you register, all licensed online casinos and land-based gambling venues in Germany are legally required to block your access. Self-exclusion lasts a minimum of 1 year and can be made permanent.
How to register: Contact the RegierungsprΓ€sidium Darmstadt (OASIS) online or via any licensed gambling operator. You can also call BZgA at 0800 1 37 27 00 for guidance.
π¦πΉ Austria — Casino Self-Exclusion
In Austria, you can self-exclude directly through licensed operators (e.g., win2day.at, Casinos Austria). Self-exclusion can be requested for specific periods or indefinitely. Land-based Casinos Austria venues maintain their own exclusion registers.
How to register: Contact your casino operator's responsible gambling department, or reach out to Spielsuchthilfe Wien for free guidance on the exclusion process.
π¨π Switzerland — GESPA National Exclusion
Switzerland maintains a national exclusion register managed by GESPA (EidgenΓΆssische Spielbankenkommission). All Swiss-licensed casinos (online and land-based) participate. Self-exclusion can be temporary or permanent.
How to register: Request exclusion at any licensed Swiss casino (online or in-person), or contact SOS Spielsucht at 0800 040 080 for assistance.
π¦πΊ Australia — National Self-Exclusion Register (BetStop)
Australia operates BetStop, the National Self-Exclusion Register. Once registered, all licensed Australian wagering providers must refuse your bets and close your accounts. Exclusion periods range from 3 months to permanent.
How to register: Visit www.betstop.gov.au or call 1800 858 858. State-based exclusion programs are also available through venues.
π International — Software-Based Blocking Tools
In addition to market-specific exclusion systems, you can install software that blocks access to gambling websites on your devices:
GamBan — Blocks 45,000+ gambling sites and apps across all your devices. www.gamban.com
Gamblock — Gambling-specific blocking software for computers and mobile devices. www.gamblock.com
